Meta Pulls Back — Cuts Metaverse Spending, Pivots Toward AI Glasses
Dec 7, 2025 By MarketDepth
Meta is significantly scaling back investment in its metaverse ambitions, slashing the budget for the initiative by as much as 30 percent as part of its 2026 planning, according to people familiar with the matter
The reduction targets the company’s virtual reality and metaverse-development arm, Reality Labs — the division behind headsets, its virtual-world platform Horizon Worlds, and other immersive-tech projects.
Meta executives say the move reflects a strategic reorientation: resources are being redirected away from metaverse-style virtual reality toward what the company sees as higher-potential growth areas, especially AI-driven wearables like smart glasses.
The decision follows years of mounting losses for Reality Labs — reportedly exceeding $70 billion since 2021 — and underwhelming adoption and financial returns from the metaverse business.
Investors reacted positively to the shift: Meta’s stock rose in response to the news, reflecting market optimism about the company trimming what had become a costly bet and potentially improving future profitability.
