Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL) cancelled hundreds of flights throughout Memorial Day weekend amid several issues, ultimately disgruntling loyal customers. The carrier cancelled 715 flights from Friday to Monday, according to the Bureau of Transportation.

Airlines Faced Issues

Though several other airlines faced similar challenges during the weekend, Delta passengers have felt the majority of the impact.

“This is primarily a Delta problem over the course of this Memorial Day weekend.”

Kyle Potter, Editor in Chief of Thrifty Traveler

The airline blamed the sudden cancellations on bad weather as well as “air traffic control actions” which took place Friday. It also emphasized that it strives to preemptively cancel flights with approximately 24 notice.

“More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation – weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case rates contributing to higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some work groups – are resulting in an operation that isn’t consistently up to the standards Delta has set for the industry in recent years.”

Furthermore, Delta recently announced plans to reduce its summer flight schedule. According to the airline, it will be cutting 100 daily flights within the US and Latin America from July 1 to August 7.
