Cineplex Inc. (TSX: CGX) has decided to temporarily lay off nearly 5,000 part-time employees.

Covid-19 Restrictions

The move comes after the government of Ontario announced additional COVID-19 restrictions on Monday to combat the spread of the Omicron variant. The restrictions came into effect on Wednesday, 1/5/2022.

Premier Announced New Measures

Premier Doug Ford announced the new measures during a news conference as hospitalizations and case counts continue to grow throughout the province. The restrictions affect gatherings, building capacity limits and have also led to school closures as well other public indoor spaces.

History of Layoffs

Cineplex already has previous history with temporary layoffs during the pandemic, having done so in March 2020 in addition to taking additional measures to help the “vast majority” of its part-time team. “We are eager to get our team back to work once and for all, as soon as these temporary restrictions are lifted,” a company spokesperson said, according to CTVNews.
